Masters Programs

The Atomic Rowing Masters Programs are for adult rowers 19 and up. If you have prior rowing experience, you are eligible for our Competitive, Development or Recreational programs. If you are new to the sport, our Development program will provide you with the skills and training you need to participate in our higher level groups. While we focus on the health and fitness benefits of rowing, our Masters team also loves the social aspects of the sport.

Regardless of your experience or fitness level, we have a place for you. Come join our Atomic family!

In this introductory program, our coaches will continue to build on lessons from the Adult Learn-To-Row to develop the rowing mechanics, build fitness, and prepare rowers for future competitive, developmental, and recreational opportunities with Atomic Rowing and ORRA programs. Participation in the Adult Learn-To-Row on either Saturday, January 20th or January 27th is encouraged, but not required to begin the Adult Development program.

This developmental program is divided into three sections:

Session I – Land Basics: In this 4-week developmental adult rowing program, participants will learn the basics of rowing on land using the concept 2 rowing ergometer. Training sessions will focus on the technical elements of the stroke, using drills and steady state rowing. General strength, basic endurance and team building will lead to increased ability to transfer concepts and practices to moving boats on the water in subsequent sessions.

Session II – Land and Water Basics: In this 4-week developmental adult rowing program, participants who have completed Session I will expand skill and knowledge of the basics of rowing. Increased use of drills and steady state rowing will highlight important aspects of the stroke and proficiency will be developed. The second half of this session offers the opportunity to transfer land rowing concepts and practices to moving boats on the water!

Session III – Preparing to Race: In this 11-week developmental adult rowing program, participants who have completed Session I and II will expand their rowing knowledge and skill on the water. This session offers the opportunity to accumulate rowing skill over time and repetition in order to be prepared to race at the Dogwood Masters Regatta on June 1, 2024 in Oak Ridge. Masters Development Session I and/or II are required prerequisites for this session.

In this 21-week experienced adult rowing program, athletes will expand their fitness foundation from the fall season. Early focus on strength, endurance and team building will progress to refinement of technique and transfer of overall fitness to moving boats on the water. The work done in January, February, March and April is intended to prepare our adult atomic athletes for peak performance in late May and June. The focus of intra-squad and other competition in March and April is to develop tactically, technically and physiologically to reach desired levels at Dogwood Masters Regatta on June 1, 2024: the end of this phase.

Those continuing into the next program will be preparing for Masters Southeast Regionals Championships in Aiken, SC (June 21-22, 2024). Selective participation in the Atomic Masters Program is established by coaches.
